WHAT  DO  WE  DO ?

BNTV help out at a number of different properties in Dorset. Some of these are listed below, to give a small idea about what we do where. Work parties mean different things at different times of the year; in winter this is where most of our practical conservation tasks take place.  Summer is more filled with helping out at events doing stewarding, such as at the outdoor plays at Corfe Castle.

A Task Leader is appointed for each Work party and he/she will liaise with the Warden about the Task. People wishing to attend notify the Task Leader by the previous Thursday to ensure adequate tools and gloves will be available. The Task Leader will also arrange any lifts required. We usually meet at 10 am.  A picnic lunch is required with plenty of fluids, especially in summer. Wellington boots or good protective foot wear is advisable and a supply of suntan lotion in summer. Old clothes are essential because we often have bonfires (good for cooking baked potatoes or marshmallows).

TYPICAL WORKPARTIES

KINGSTON LACY : Work on the project to redevelop  the kitchen garden

CORFE CASTLE : Hedge laying, coppicing and restoring heath land as part of the Egdon Project.

STUDLAND : Tree planting and sand dune development to prevent coastal erosion and dry stonewalling•

BROWNSEA : Clearance of rhododendrons to return the island to its original habitat for the protection of the wildlife, especially the red squirrel.   Construction of a woodland walk.

GOLDEN CAP : Dry stone walling
